@xaviqaz LOL you’re only kidding yourself if you think christianity is in any way good. It’s one of the worst parts of this world.
Also, I don’t know many atheists that “praise” ANY ancient religious society. There are atheists, who unlike myself, “tolerate” religions, but many know of how much harm they cause.
All the atheists here are “praising” is the social tradition of getting together with family and gift giving. The word Christmas is nothing more then a meaningless name.
@xaviqaz It would be difficult to find many ancient societies that were more “cruel and intolerant” than Christianity. Some, sure. But Christianity was right up there with the worst. And given the teaching of the ROman Catholic church in particular Christianity goes on killing people even today in Africa. But go back in a history just a few centuries and you will find Christianity–priest and their supporter carrying out ona vast scale atrocities too cruel to even think about. Read a book
Americans are sooo ignorant of their own history. You can tell that Mr Leyden is a New Englander. His name is the name of the city in Holland where the so-called “pilgrim fathers” lived before coming to Plymouth. While they were in Holland and afterwards in Massachusetts they never celebrated Christmas. Their Puritan neighbours in Boston specifically BANNED Christmas altogether and it was criminal offence to be caught celebrating it. Why? Not because it was Christian but because it was Pagan.
if you ask me, its a Christmas tree. Its called a Christmas tree to me because i was raised calling it a Christmas tree and thats how it will stay with me. However, Lincoln Chafee is calling it a holiday tree in the state house because it goes with the religious freedom thing in Rhode Island (obviously the whole US, but RI is more relevant), so he is open to it being called anything. So this really isnt as much of a big deal to me as the Rhode Island media portrays it to be. (ps i live in RI)
@Sanosukeafo I find it funny how atheists here praise traditions coming from ancient societies that were much more cruel and intolerant that christiany has ever been. No, there was not an idyllic egalitarian and tolerant world before christianity.
God, that guy is SO right about that calendar thing. I’m so pissed that they’d think of changing a holiday’s name and purpose. I mean, December 17th – 25th has ALWAYS been Saturnalia, a time for naked, drunk singing and debauchery.
Who would do such a cruel thing, to try to change holidays?
I’m an ex-Muslim Atheist, and assuming there’s any credibility to this story (which is hard considering this is Faux news), I would have to disagree with calling it anything other than a Christmas tree. I mean, seriously, why make a big deal out of nothing? Why be such sour ass*s? Call it a Christmas f*cking tree cause that’s what it is. This is a time for celebration not for bitter debate. Be decent human beings. If you don’t like Christmas, shut up and go to bed.
@topperheartramada The name being used is the one that describes the christian celebration of the birth of jesus. Just because a secular society has adopted the name to describe general and non-religious based activities does not make it correct in it’s use. YOUR use of the word betray was not befitting of the sentence you used. YOU’RE a moron, and YOU’RE wasting my time. It boggles my mind that people can be as stupid as you. Now run along and die in a fire please.
@Sanosukeafo I think you need to get a dictionary, see the different meanings of the word ‘betray’. Also, you need to learn that YOU’RE and YOUR mean totally different things. Finally, I don’t see how you can say that the names you suggested are ‘more fitting’ than the name that has been in use for centuries. It boggles the mind.
@topperheartramada You said: “Just because the name of the holiday betrays its Christian origins doesn’t make it a Christian holiday”. Betrays? It’s called CHRIST MAS, it’s name does the opposite of betray. I guess you should check your grammar yourself, kid.
Also, just because the name of Christmas is in common use, doesn’t make it right. Winter Holiday, or Winter Solstice Festivities would be more fitting for what average Americans celebrate. Unless your celebrating baby Jesus. Get it? Loser
@gwross1978 well said! It’s a Christmas tree, its always been called a Christmas tree…this country is so concerned about not offending anyone, yet so many people are offended by them changing a religious holiday to fit their beliefs!

it is a fucking tree

I dunno if I’m surprised or not that Fox News would throw a shitstorm over something so stupid.
@xaviqaz The point of atheists saying that is to get you to see that Christmas was not originally about Christ.
@xaviqaz Tuesday comes from Tyr’s Day. Wednesday comes from Odin’s Day. Thursday comes from Thor’s Day. Deal with it.
Holiday comes from “Holy Day”. Christmas from “Christ’s mass”. Deal with it.

it is a tree and christmas is a big fucking joke
it is a tree and christmans is a joke
Then you’re a “Blue Spruce” farmer, “Christmas” isn’t a species of tree.
You can sell whatever you like, but once you get rid of said product, the owner can call it whatever the hell they want.
And hate monguering idiots! Give corrupt governors’ numbers!
idiots!

@Sanosukeafo Oh dear, now you are confusing IT’S and ITS. Plus I haven’t a clue what you are trying to say.

Christmas is a pagan holiday, let’s call it Wotan’s tree
